Clears over ext. or interior Flats

Okay here is the dealio. I am at a house where I have to paint one ext. door the same color as the body. I do not want to buy a quart just for the door. Has anyone just brushed a clear over the flat coat? Flecto's Diamond finish. The savings is 2 fold because I do not have to buy an $18. quart and I am able to spray the first coat.

Did you make sure you caulked it out with toothpaste before you coated it?
