I need to cover marble so that I can texture and faux paint a fireplace. Will a primer such as Zinsser work or do I need to cover it with skim or hardiboard or something to that nature?

There is more to the story than that. I had done the rest of the room and the marlbe color just doesn't make it with the chosen colors. Another reason to always stay neutral in color when making big investments! I also don't want to do irreversable damage to the marble for further down the line when it may be loved again.
