MAB gave me mine for free. I went into BM today and they told me it was $18. I said no thanks and walked out.

I can see them not giving fandecks away like candy because they do cost money. But if you took the time to open an account then they should give you one for free.

Not to be mean but do you give away $18.00 gallons of paint. I have suppliers that will loan me one if needed, but I have not had any freebie fandecks. I figure they are cost of business if I want to carry them. my 2 cents worth.

This issue comes up once in a while. Out here they want $10.00 for one. When I first got here they gave me one, but the dang customers keep snagging them. I've gotten two more so far, without paying, but they don't like it.

Went back "home" for sept, and oct. That mgr. gave me one before I even finished asking for it. Love that store. Uh, that would be the SW in Crystal Lake IL. (ding)

Why should we pay for fan decks? We spec the material and decide what goes on the walls. If the paint store can't help me help them, then I will take my business elsewhere.

We are the primary salesmen of paint. Repaint contractors control a large part of the market, but we are very fragmented and thus we speak with a very fragmented voice.

Personally, I let my reps know this. Perhaps more of us should.

My local SW gives me them for free. I'm selling their paint to the home owners, so why shouldn't they? I see it as a business card. You give them out for free to get business. They give them out to us for business. Only time I've noticed them charge is when it's a homeowner wanting one, which is understandable. ;)

What we are really saying is that Ben Moore should supply the stores with them to give us for free. If the stores pay for them I might have sympathy,
but if they are free then hand them over.

I started at home depot years ago...I have every ralph lauren / glidden / behr one they make...I just don't use them. My paint store gives them to me for free...i got 4 different types....california historic colors....ben moore pottery barn colors...Aura solids...and ben moore color combinations (my favorite)... it's the smaller one with all earthtones ...i go to the ben moore shows and get as many as I can carry...last year I got a case of them... I even got aura packages...with estimating sheets...leather folder and a whole lot of goodies.....I also have 4 ben moore briefcases, the ones that hold fan decks and your portfolio. In fact I should share them with you, I don't need that many.....

Hows this, if anyone is near my...or wants to pay for shipping...they can have one....I'll give away 2...they are nice.

I'm in mass. near worcester...will be in Marlborough tomorrow...let me know.

I was going to say you are right about the cost of doing business but misguided in your outlook. That's the paint companies cost of doing business. But then I read Brian's post and he already summed that up for ya

The independent dealers that carry Ben Moore must pay for theirs
The company owned stores of Sherwin Williams do not
That's why you'll generally find SW stores more likely to part with them at no charge

Most Ben Moore dealers do have a way to charge back the cost for contractors...but I suppose that's up to the store and/or it's rep as to how loose to be with that

But, to answer your question, no
I don't think I've ever paid for one

I went into BM today and they told me it was $18
You got hosed
That's the homeowner price
Even if you've abused the free ones, they should be like "OK, they are 12 bucks for extra ones now" or something
Did they know you were a contractor?
