I have this philosophy about drop cloths and builder's paper: that they are two different things used for two different purposes.
Paper (as far as covering floors) is used UNDER drop cloths to:
(a) Catch everything the drop cloth DOESN'T catch
(b) Alleviate paint tracking from your shoes
Drop Cloths are used ON TOP of paper to:
(a) Catch paint spatter that may happen in FRONT of you (because you should never stand on your drop cloth!)
(b) Keep spilled paint from soaking through the paper onto the floor (but do us all a favor and don't spill paint, mmkay...?)
With this philosophy, I consequently believe that drop cloths should always be used WITH paper and not either/or. Furthermore, BOTH should ALWAYS be used.
Plastic is used just to cover things that won't get walked on.
There are other alternatives to these, but what are your thoughts on all this? Do you disagree with anything I said about paper and drop cloths? Do you use plastic for anything other than that?

I've spent HOURS with my 5-in-1 and rag scraping paint spatter off many customers' wood floors because we didn't (still don't) use this method, so I may be a little jaded... I came out of the field to be the estimator, but I want to influence my PM to change to this method.
