Gina and the gang at DSM neoresins located in Wilmingont MA invited a few of us painters to come onto their premises and evaluate a few products - it was a great learning experience and had a good talk about the industry and where coatings are headed. They were really nice and even supplied some great sandwiches and drinks from Panera. It's a lot of hard work for these guys to come up with very low VOC waterbourne paints that perform like the old oils. And I think we gave alot of constructive criticsm. One product I think in the field probably would perform great - but I think one product literally blew me away - I think the paints of tomorrow are something to really look forward to.

They gave us like 5 different formulations of waterbourne trim enamel - and we applied it to a couple of surfaces. They're just something out of the lab, with feedback then present it to the major paint companies so they can start their formulation process. I am just saying that one of the products that I brushed on some factory primed trim looked like it was applied with an airless - just a beautiful coat of paint.

I was there with Plainpainter and agree with everything he says.

I also was REAL impressed with ALL the coatings, but one just blew me away. Even when a hack like me applied, it looked sprayed on.

Gina said they would be contacting the others who volunteered.

We also will not know who will be using these resins in what paints. That knowledge is not for public consumption.

But what this tells me is that there will vast improvements in the coatings industry in the near future.

I was very impressed with the people we met and the products we tested. I thank them all for the opportunity to give feedback. And damn it, Gina said I should take a sandwich with me, and I must left it there while putting on my jacket. :(

OH, and the camera we got for our trouble ain't half bad at all. It's a Canon A470, 7.1 megapix, 3.4 optical zoom. It's definitely not comparable to my Nikon D-40, but it's a great jobsite camera or for someone who is not a photophile.
Here's a shot I took from my mother's house in Deluxbury, MA.
