There are so many threads about paints for this and paints for that. There does not seem to be a consensus about which stains are best and for what.
Deck stains
Siding Stains
Clears and toners
Semis
Semi Solids
Solid Colors
Water vs Oil

What is best and for what?
I have been recommending semi solid oil for decks for people that want a solid look, a little longer protection and no film build.

I like Sikkens SRD for decks.

Siding it really is only old cedar around here and it seems we use more
CWF UV-5 on that (transparent) or Cabot's Pro-vt for a solid.

lol smartass . . .
Though a lot of stains seem to be warranted like 8 years on siding, 3 or decks or something like that.
Cabots is nice stain, but is it really nicer than anything else out there available for several dollars a gallon less?

I have to drop a bid off to a customer who would like me to use a Sherwin Williams stain. Don't have a problem with it (or shoudl I?) Haven't used SW stains in years. Which product of theirs should I be looking for? It's an addition, bare cedar.

Solid or Semi? Either way on siding latex is supposed to last longer.

Cabot. Everything.
why though? What is to make me believe its not the same stuff as in everyone else's cans with a couple dollars tacked on?

Sikkens Everything

SRD - Semi-Trans or Full Trans Decks, Siding, Rails
LOG & Siding - Translucent for LOG Homes AND SIDING!!!
Rubbol Series - Solid Stain For Anything Exterior
Cetol 23 System also works great but is a three coat system so pick and choose wisely

Because I said so...j/k. Its personal preference really. As with any product discussion, most of the premium lines by the majors and regionals are pretty darn good...except Sikkens...ha

What is to make me believe that you are not Severson with a better vocabulary?

Winters are rough up here and the majority of the houses we do are lakeside and during the summer months the sun glares off the water and wreaks havoc on most paints and stains. I look at a lot of houses that were painted 3-5 years ago and have already peeled, cracked, or faded. I've always had great experiences with Sikkens and although I do like Cabot as well, most HO's up here have heard about Sikkens and insist it's used or are impressed when I tell them that's what I am going to use. The really nice thing about the Log & Siding line is the Satin finish. It gives a really great appearance when complete. As far as Garage Doors go, Sikkens can be used on them too.

Are you using Rubol oil solid stain or the latex? I noticed on the latex they state that it dries with a low sheen finish, which I have never seen in a stain before. It that accurate and if so, do you feel like it builds more of a film than other solid latex stains?

Hmm..... Never used it. Looks like its a hybrid product (Alkyd & Acrylic). I like the Satin Sheen Rubbol Dek gives and spec sheet says its great on siding. Personally, I don't like using solid stains on house siding. Why not paint? Easier App & less fading.

I think solid stains are easier and result in a easier to maintain surface, compared to a painted surface. I do think paint should last longer, as long as there are no moisture issues, but for rough cedar, solid stain is the way to go.
