Don't you hate when that happens? Atleast you will sleep good tonight knowing they have good siding.
We are doing more residential repaints than usual this year. I set up an exterior crew specifically for that purpose. I had forgotten all the little surprises you can run into. Fortunately my contract was very clear that we were replacing x amount of rotten siding and cornerboards only. Its fun to haul out the cool tools sometimes. Although, kind of funny when the carpentry that the painters just did is the best stuff on the house...

We're complete opposite. Usually do exteriors from march/april till november with maybe 1 or 2 small interiors. This year I think we only did 1 exterior sofar untill monday. In 9 years is the first summer I ever spent indoors.

The past few years we had turned away most of the exterior repaints that came along. It is a pain in the butt dealing with the weather, but it can be worth it if you get good jobs at good prices. Interior is much more predictable, which I like, but its a long winter here in VT inside. I am liking the exterior fresh air this year, even though it has been rainy. Saving alot of the soffets and porches for the rainy days.

Scott,

where was the moisture coming from ?

From that addition roof or the main roof or pipe burst?

And do I see where a bilg ole paper wasp nest was in the corner under the eve of the addition's roof ?

Nice job, BTW. You're now qualified to work on this old shack I live in

The roof above that section of siding was improperly flashed and directing all the water off the roof behind the siding where it sat and rotted the plywood. The moisture in the plywood migrated to the studs. It was weird, the tops and bottoms of the studs were fine, the middles were gone. Roofers...

Oh, good eye, that nest was the size of a football. That was the first thing to go.

Don't worry the painters will fix it. Keep doing this and you'll have to hang out at carpentrytalk.com

I have been hanging out with carpenters for too many years already. Thats how I learned about this stuff. They would rather tell me how to fix these messes than come and do it for me. When they need paint work on their houses, I tell them exactly how I would do it...works both ways.

This is the sort of thing I was referring to in the Pinnacle posts about offering customers as much convenience and value as possible. 5 years ago I would have opened this up, called the homeowner and told them they need to find a carpenter. Now, I send them pictures, describe the situation and get them to approve the extra work. On something like this, there is really no other option. Cant hang plastic over it for the weekend with rain coming.

Did you do the hands on work or do you have a crew for that?
I enjoy carpentry on residential jobs, so my plan was to peel out a few clapboards and nail new ones up myself. When I exposed the problem, I pulled one of my painters of prep to clean out the mess while I went to contact the customer and get the lumber and tools. It came together quickly.
