We've been using SW's DTM Acrylic Coating with good success.

Ditto.
Are spray cans out of the question? How much are you painting?

For most wrought iron I would use a mini-roller.

For hard to reach or intricate parts, I use a Preval sprayer.

Does that come in a satin finish, and can it be painted directly over shiny oil surfaces.

I don't recall DTM coming in satin...

and latex is fine over oil, but I would be at least scuffing and wiping

The BM that used to be Ironclad was renamed DTM and comes in a low lustre finish.

I would never put latex over oil.
I like to use marine enamel high gloss. But it's illegal to use unless your using it industrial now. Gotta find a replacement to

Doesn't DTM have the same properties as industrial enamel except it's latex instead of oil? I know its made to go over metal but I also know they sell a DTM Primer/Finish which would be good if you want to go with flat.
BM DTM or Rustoleum? Had good luck with both
It has been almost six years Dave, I think an update to how it went is due.

Could of saved me from changing my number from all the pissed off customers.

I did not bump it but now it is entertaining.
I like to color the rails of iron by grey color, it suits to my house color and I think it's a common color for railings.
