I've heard that new galv. metal needs to be weathered for at least 6 months before painting.

You need to etch the metal somehow and deal with the slick factory coating-there are a bunch of different products on the market, but I've heard that a lot of folks have just used vinegar

Prime with a primer specific for galv. metal

Paint with a quality topcoat
