Hi guys,

It's been awhile since I've posted anything, but I could think of only one place to get advice and opinions on this next project. I've been hired to paint a 20' x 20' qr code for a bakery. If you don't know what a qr code is. it's just a square code that smart phones can scan, and it directs to a webpage, phone number, message, etc.

In this case the code will lead to a commecial that makes fun of the competition, kind of in bad taste really, but that doesn't relate to my job.

I figured most of you guys are tech savvy enough to actually know what these codes are and ways to use them. I've already made the code using a service called qrhost they claim to offer unlimited hosting and unlimited scans for free, so I guess I'll go with that since I've read online that other codes stop working after a certain number of scans.

The plan is to print the code out in 3' sheets, I've already talked to a few print shops that said they can print it that way. After I get the sheets I wants to cut out the code in numbered squares. Next I plan to chalk line a 20 x 20 square on the building where they want the code to go. I will then tape up the sqaures like a puzzle to make the entire code. once it's all up, I'll tape around the cut edges to make a clean line. Then I'll simply spray over it with a hvlp, I want to use the hvlp to try to make the edges look rounded, then i want to add some shadowing and glossy effects.

Atleast that's my plan for now, but I was hoping someone had some better ideas. I'll have a couple of days in this easy, I would like to spend no more than a day on it.

Judging by the amount of responses to my last post compared to this one. I'm assuming no one knows much about these qr codes. that's ok, I did'nt know what they were either till i was asked to do this. I did find out however you should not go over 30-40 characters in one code.

I know what it is, as I have the app on my phone. Its a pretty neat thing to use. Just cant imagine the PITA is going to be to tape that all out!

Has anyone tested it to see if the large image will work?
Yes, qr codes are huge in asia. From what i've been reading many buildings in tokyo are using nothing but a big qr code to advertise. I also read you can scan the codes on billboards while driving by them (if you can get your phone out fast enough)

What if you were to project the image on to the surface using a projector, a 20' square would be a sinch. I have been to a couple of freestyle drive-ins where they just plugged into a generator and played the DVD through their laptop. They actually have projectors with built-in DVD players. Might have to tape it off at night though. I wonder if it is possible to have the QR generator print out a simpler code? I think they are considered 2D though so maybe not. And actually a barcode would be better and that rate.

I am probably getting a new van soon and when talking to my sign guy he suggested putting a QR code on my van that takes you to before and after shots of jobs I've done. I haven't decided on anything but I love the idea.

This actually sounds like a good idea. I could see doing something like this if this becomes a regular service. Maybe I should start marketing for huge painted qr codes.

You can have a less complex code, here is one with a lot less blocks in it. When scanned, it leads to the website qrhost.net where i made it. I could do one like this in no time compared to the one above.

Update them without re-painting

Came across a service which allows you to print the code and then update it again and again, essentially controlling the code. That means you don't have to re-pait/print just update the code with your mobile or pc. It also has 30% error correction so it'll work for all readers and you can store 7000 words in it without creating a complex design. Check it out dynamic qr codes.

Anyway, it seems alright to me
