[Redux]

We restored & reglazed the windows on the following home in the mid 1980s which is located @ the Estée Lauder Hamptons compound, the build date of which is unknown. Judging by the single hung sash lacking counter weights, sash chords, and pulley mechanisms, the windows were probably from the latter part of the 17th century to the mid 18th century, and utilized moveable pins inserted into holes bored into the frames to hold the lower sash open, with the upper sash being fixed. The sash were in exceptional condition given their age, with very little to no rot or decay. Much of the original glass had been changed out during the restoration with mouth-blown restoration glass which contained bubbles, ripples, and waves. The windows on the rear addition were not period to the home and were added at a later date. I have some old Polaroids of the restoration process and will post-’em if I can locate them.

Is it me or just the pic...is/was that house leaning? Or is it just the downspout?

It looks out of plumb due to having taken a pic of an old Polaroid that had a curl in it….all the original post & beam framing was plumb and square…the house had been purchased by the client, moved from a different property where it had originally stood for centuries, and set on a new foundation followed by a meticulous ground-up restoration.

The client bought a number of centuries old buildings and structures which were moved to the property & meticulously restored and preserved, one being what may have been an 18th century church moved from Massachusetts.

Stripped, reglazed, and restored 56 windows, 38 cypress shutters & cedar siding for actress, Joan Alexander, who was the voice of Lois Lane on over 1600 episodes of the Adventures of Superman radio series…she however had us reinstall the cheesy aluminum screens/storm windows.

Coincidentally it turned out she knew my dad when he was a kid when working as a secretary at the Catholic school he attended. He was always getting into trouble, and for his punishment, the nuns made him sit in her filing cabinet drawer..

Moving homes/structures is such a mind boggling feat of engineering and money!
I worked in a huge waterfront, limestone house back in the day,(approx 10k sq ft, guessing 1920's) that was moved (i don't know when) down the Detroit River when it was frozen. It is a beautiful home and I'm partial to limestone..hehe

Yes, it is quite the engineering feat!

I’ve worked on quite a few historic preservation projects over the years, many of the structures being purchased and moved to new locations in order to preserve them, rather than have them bulldozed and end up in a dumpster.

We did the following house pictured for another client immediately across the street from Joan Alexander Stanton’s house which had been moved from a different property….you can notice from the 2nd pic that many of the 1805 built sash had been removed…we had actually set up shop in the house and were stripping and reglazing the sash while the house was in-tow and being moved across acres of farmland.

Wow, I love that sunroom in the last picture! Lantern room? What is the name for it? That house is quite a maintenance commitment on the owners part.


I love the look of East Coast homes (formal balance and natural/stained Cedar shingles w/ loads of windows and no eaves). Classic!
People try to build homes like that around here, but the weather is too harsh (high humidity, cold wet winters, wet summers). The shingles fall off, and all the wood starts to go bad very quickly.

I love the old historical country homes in the northeast, although the exteriors do take quite a beating, requiring tons of maintenance and $$..

The sunroom was a new addition with what I think may have been cheap Marvin Windows that typically rotted out in < 20 years…we did however remove the wood glazing strips on the muntins and reglazed those with linseed oil putty.

We also changed out the new sunroom glass with old glass…we purchased a bunch of old storm windows, utilizing the old storm window glass which we cut and installed.
