So its spring and its crazy. No matter how much we prepared for it over the winter, its here and there are always surprises. Lately, in the day to day running of my business, there have been several "pop-up" situations that have left us without someone or something for a day. It made me realize how much we as business owners rely on our resources.
What resource, whether human, physical or otherwise, would you find it just about impossible to go through a day without?
For me it happened last week. One morning I was on the road and realized my phone had not rung (rang?) in over an hour - this never happens. So, compulsively, I made a call and could not get phone service. First thought: I'm sure we paid the bill on time. After another hour of excruciating lack of service I was passing a Unicel outlet and stopped in to find a line of people out the door and the kid behind the counter saying: "Its not your phones, the network is down and they are giving us no eta on when it will be back up." It was like panic in the room. And for me, complete inability to communicate with my employees on 3 different jobs in 3 different towns without spending almost $4/gallon to personally drive to them, which I did. I also had an estimate to get to and was supposed to call the homeowner when I got into town...tried finding a payphone when you need one lately? Who needs one? This story could go on, but you get the idea...
What would yours be?
