I just wanted to let you contractors know ,who haven't tried it, handing out your cards or flyers in a area you have been working in does leed to more jobs. I had never gone about house to house before doing this, but during this slow times we are in I decided to give it a go.
I probably did't hand out more than 20 cards and only spoke to 5 out of 20 ho that was home. I got to bid 3 complete exteriors and have landed 1 so far for $5,300. So for about 1 hr of my time it realy paid off.;)

I have a nice brochure detailing our work that directs one to the website for more info. So I usually take the time to visit some of the neighbors while on the job. I always leave some with the client too since they love to show off their new rooms and want to brag about who did the work. It pays off..........

I have tried this, and all I got is the law called on me, really, they said they got several calls bout some strange dude knockin on doors. but later found out that there was a comunity alert bout bogus contractors in the area. Id might give it a try again, Ill do bout anything to keep the little business going durrin the slow times, but the door2door thing always kinda makes me feel like Im beggin/desperate, its like the ho is thinkin,, this guy owns his own business and he's out walkin round askin for work? Id might try payin some youngbloods to do it. I just have a hard time with the consept of the whole thing. I think it be more the standard to let someone hand them out. and even give them a nice bonus if you land a job, kinda like havin your own little agents. greed might just cause them to really hunt jobs down for you?

I am still hanging on to the old phrase that goes something like "Honest business people don't have time to come knocking on your door as they are too busy doing business."

We will see how long that lasts . . .
Nothing dishonest about me or what I do....,,, or did to come up with some badly needed work, :censored: keep hanging on you will be hanging on to nothing soon enough in this economy if you don't learn some new tricks to stay in buisness.;)

I don't knock on doors, but I will send a mailing to the neighbors informing them that I am working in the neighborhood. And with the customers approval, they are welcome to call and make an appointment while I'm there if they'd like to see the work. Works pretty well

This is a great idea! We generally have a passer by stop and look or ask a few questions if we're exterior painting in a subdivision. But sending a mailing out gives them something to look for as well as getting your name out there for people to buzz about.

I've also heard this is a good idea. It must work. Just think, people are always looking for a "good" painter and if they know one is in the neighborhood, they must want to check them out. I like to say, like a dentist or repairman, you want to like the person/ company and know they do good work/ trust them. Best of luck - A Better Painter, LLC - MS.

It's hard to say at this moment, but I may have just hit a gold mine.... I did a job in one of Arbor Homes' developments that was built in 2003. It is now 5 years later and since that one trim job about two weeks ago, I have gotten 2 other jobs and bid 2 more homes today, folks are just driving by and watching us work.... Their like "Oh a painter in the area, get a quote before they leave !!!!" As if it is a rarity...

We are there all week this week and I am beginning to wonder if there ever has been a painter in this development being that it's only been 5 years. The House I am doing now is paying $6k with Duration Satin all around. A lot of the other homes are the same style and will pay about as much, here is what a lot of these homes look like:

I'll be walking around the neighborhood tomorrow with flyer's.

Congrats on the job and jobs:)
We have the same thing happen when on exteriors and it's great especially when it's in a high end neighborhood. Plus with exteriors, it's free advertisement, but signs are always a good idea in front of the house you're painting....

That's about the price we'd charge down here including materials but down South, things are typically a little less...

I have the up most respect for people going door to door. If one is not busy enough. If one is willing to do whatever it takes to get the wheels rolling, then I tip my hat for that one
I've handed out flyers personal, used a mailer signs banners just to get my name out their.

Jason, charge more than $6k for that house. We are doing one now that is a little bigger and the cost is just over $9k with duration satin and duration gloss trim.
I agree, if they are giddy about you and your price.. they have gotten other prices and your way low... bump up the price on the next one.. I bet you still get it.

Quality and reliability cost money...
