I have just opened my own painting business in Knoxville, TN this year and I need some help. I need info on how to get in with big contractors or businesses to have the ability to bid on jobs on a consistent basis. I have a self sufficient residential business right now and I am looking at expansion into other markets. Anyone out there with any advice they could give would be GREATLY appreciated. My e mail address is [email protected] or just leave me a post on painttalk.com. I thank you in advance for taking the time to read this.

I have always done painting as a side job, along with my 9-5. Now I am looking to branch out into bigger projects and make this my only full time job. I am just looking for ideas on getting my foot in the door to be able to have the oppurtunity to bid.

I would probably start by building that self sufficient residential business that you spoke of. New construction in general and housing starts are nationally at lows. There is a big big difference between doing a few cash side jobs per year and running an actually self sufficient paint business. A world of difference.

If you stick around on this forum you will learn alot about the difference between creating a job for yourself and building a business.

I could just say market yourself to builders. Pick up the phone, make some brochures, get some business cards and pound the pavement, but...

Thanks guys. I am intelligent enough to realize that this isn't going to take off overnight. I am only looking for a few ideas on getting in with the right contractors to have the ability to bid some jobs. I also know the difference between having a job and building a business. I am a general manager for a very successful company and am looking to branch out on my own when the job market dictates the ability to do so. I am not going to go out and quit my job just yet, but building my residential is going to take the same work and time that I have already spoke of. Thanks for any and all help.

Never mind guys. I was under the impression that I may receive a few ideas from this site. Your sarcasm is understandable towards someone new to this site, but unneeded and unwarranted. All I am looking for is help in obtaining ideas about how to reach out to contractors to get into not only new construction, but also the oppurtunity for some possible commercial work as well. I am looking to work fully for myself sometime in the future and I had hoped for a few ideas from some people in the business. I just hope that in the future when new people sign on for this site that they are met with a little more help and understanding to someone ignorant to the innerworkings of some of the business.

Not trying to chase you away, this is a wonderful site and you will get the help you need. When posting a thread, you really need to explain yourself in detail or you will get responses like the ones above. I feel that you are all over the place with this thread. How can anybody give you advise?

Like mentioned I would stay away from new construction and concentrate on high end residential repaints, there is a lot of money in there. If then maybe try and hook up with some contractors that do high end remodels like basements or similar no one wants to be a spray and go guy....

Ok, my responses may seem "all over the place" because I am met with sarcasm instead of help or questions to further understand what I am asking. Let me make it simple....I say "self sufficient" because right now it keeps me busy on my days off and on weekends. I have gotten the jobs that I have now, and have gotten in the past, through circulatory and newspaper advertising. I do not know how to get in touch with contractors to let them know I am in business and to keep me in mind when they accept bids for upcoming jobs. I know I can do direct mail, but I am wondering if there isn't an easier way to do this. If you have any questions please ask, I am willing to answer each one of them. Thanks

I apologize if my comment came across as sarcasm, but when you said you had a self sufficient business and were looking to expand it and make this your only job, I thought it relevant to clarify.

There is alot of discussion on this forum about the difference. If you havent yet been full time self employed or a business owner, it is easy to get sucked into creating a job for yourself. And it can be the hardest most unforgiving and unrewarding job you ever imagined.

Just trying to help. There is no magic bullet secret answer to success in building relationships with contractors. I have worked for contractors for 12 years and am still working it out. As I said above, if you are serious about it, marketing is where it starts.

No harm, no foul I have always heard. Thanks guys...I know I said your sarcasm is unneeded, but maybe I do need someone to "kick me in the pants" to make me remember that this is NOT going to be easy, and that I just have to remain diligent in my efforts. I have business cards and I guess I just need to "pound the pavement" as stated above. Any other ideas you guys may have for someone just starting out would be appreciated, minus the sarcasm maybe...haha. I am a person who believes the glass is half full, and I need to put in the time required to run a successful business. It is just so hard starting out by myself, with a family AND a full time demanding job.

Welcome aboard, this board has a lot close members, and they do sometimes come off in the wrong way to new guys here imo. but they mean well. imo

You want to go to work for for GC, put yourself a package togeather, ins info, w/c info,, refs a intro letter, some history of yourself. Call the GC you want to meet, tell them you want to stop by for a minute of their time and introduce yourself, and leave some info on your company.

I for one would recomend you stay in the res market. and forget about the new market. This is a good place, but try to post questions that are direct.

goodluck and welcome aboard.

Kind've a hard question to answer. I would snoop around to see who the smaller go to companies are for remodeling. Who's always busy in your area? When you find them, contact them with your company info & let them know you're interested in any paint work they may come by. They won't keep you busy every day all year long, but you might hit it lucky & get your foot in with the right person.

With a company I used to work for I hooked up with a remodeler that hated to paint. He started giving me little side jobs here & there, and before I knew it I had to quit my job just to handle the jobs he was tossing me.

Another possible good area would be to hook up with your local real estate companies. THEY NEED PAINTERS. People selling their houses usually need to freshen up the walls to get rid of what others see as horrible taste in colors & wallpaper. Only problem with them is they usually want it done yesterday & aren't always looking to spend a fortune on something they're getting rid of. Be prepared to have a company truck, business cards, and insurance when dealing with them.

Then you got direct mail. If you look into the actual costs of targeting everybody you want, you'll run away from the idea. Try going out for a saturday drive in the nicer $$$ areas looking for defects to their paint job. Take down their addresses & mail them a postcard. Those people know their paint looks like crap but keep pushing it off. If they get your card in the mail they might get reminded of the work that needs done & give you a ring.

So many ways to branch out. Just depends on where you are, what you're after, and how much you want to spend. I'm no pro on this but figured I toss out some ideas. Don't get mad with the sarcasm here either... We're a bunch of contractors who get asked this question every other day by people who usually aren't serious & never post again after getting the decent answers they wanted. They're all good people here once you stick around for a little while.
