I'm starting to get enough work coming in to where I could use an extra hand. I'm not confident enough to hire someone full time as I may not be able to produce that much work yet---though I really hope I can this year as I look to working my way "out of the bucket". My question is for those who need help here and there....should I just find someone who has insurance and 1099 them at the end of the year? What if I find someone good who doesn't have their own insurance---maybe I pay for it to get going and they work it back through me? Just trying to find the best route to take here any advice as always is appreciated. Thanks

Take the plunge and hire a full time helper and have your insurance updated to reflect the extra man. To truely grow a company you have to work out of your comfort zone, otherwise there will always be a reason why you're not quite ready to "insert whatever dream or goal here".

You'll also be surprised how things work out, you'll probably hire the extra man and in a few weeks think i might need to hire another. Just my nickle and 2 pennys.

If it is your goal to get out of the bucket you will need some people, either employees or subs.
If you choose not to get help but still manage to reach your goal of getting out of the bucket, then all there will be on your jobs is...the bucket.

My insurance guy said if I use subs every day, tell them when to be at work and when to leave, and pay them hourly and weekly it will look like they are employees and could come back to bite me. So I will sub guys with there own insurance and make sure they get or have a DBA so they are there own business. Probably pay them upon completion of jobs--but if its a big job pay throughout. Then at the end of the year I will 1099 them.

I have one guy who's been w/ me for 5 years. I 1099 him,he holds his own ins. he gets paid well and every week. The saving grace for me is that he comes up w/ a little work each year and 1099's me. This way he is running a business also and not relying on me as a "full time job". Hope this helps....

Do you mean he comes up with a couple of jobs where you work for him? Thats where he 1099's you?
Yes he comes up w/ about 5 or 6 jobs a year, usally small. I work for him, instead of him swapping hours he pays me and at tax time he 1099's me for the money he has paid. My acct. said keep that up or "THE MAN" (IRS) WILL come down on me and force me to hire him as an employee not a sub.
That means paying unemployment tax and so on...

APC, Ever since I've expanded a little my company is getting more exposure
and I am getting more calls. I only have one guy but that puts us in twice as many places, hence more exposure. I hired him as a once in a while guy when he started. Shortly after he was working w/ me every day and still is.

Good luck I know it seems risky but it will be worth it.
