Well you should lessen your payroll to accommodate for the amount of work you have comming in. Why have 8 guys if you only have work for 3? (just an example)

Maybe this will help you...If you are a legal company in your area, and you pay all your taxes, unemployment, state, local, federal, and so on.
You have several options :

1) Be honest with employees , and let them know the status of work coming in.

2)Have them all open claims for unemployment , and then rotate your employees so they can get at least partial unemployment on days they are not needed. You are not going to pay a high priced good painter to do a labors job. It shows them that you care, and not just using them. If they don't show up for work on days you need them, then stop their unemployment , and cut them loose.

3) Or you can pay them cash under the table, but that doesn't do you or them any good.

a) The penalty if you get caught is quite high in fines.
b) It doesn't help build up their unemployment

4) Or just terminate the ones you don't need and hope you can replace them later, but what kind of message does that send to the rest of your employees ?

Employees want the same thing you want, respect, loyalty, and stability .
