I feel like crunching numbers, developing formulas for production rates for various surfaces, determining job profitability, gross and net profit, and running sales calls and working up estimates would easily be a full time job for me right now. Is this normal?

 This is the worst part of the job for me. I know it needs to be done but it is very time consuming.
What he said!

Seems like it never ends. I'm actually taking a break from estimating a print right now as i reply to this thread! We're a family business so a lot of the paperwork is distributed between a couple different people. It's not the most efficient machine in the world but it does allow us to keep our sanity. ... or is it just distributing the craziness amongst multiple people? Whatever it is, find someone you trust and teach them to help if you're getting overwhelmed.

if it could be a full time job, then maybe it's time to make it your full time job. If you are doing that many estimates, then you might be at a point to send painters out into the field while you focus on selling, business, and marketing.

On an average day I might spend 20 to 30 minutes actually "crunching numbers", but which I mean analyzing the P&L, balance sheet, job costing, etc. Some days I might spend a few hours, particularly during the planning season. This may or may not be a surprise, but this is the part of the business I enjoy the most (except for posting on PT of course).

I spend 2 to 6 hours a day on sales/ estimating, depending on location, complexity, and quantity.
