I aint real clear on why ya all treat your numbers like a deep dark teenage secret with ya cousin? around here its no big deal.(either way) if somebody local wanted to know it aint hard, customers have a tendacy to talk, and it keeps folks in line,(that are serious) youd think as many folks are here that it would be a good nationwide scale just to stand next to and check ourselfs. then everybody can stop havin to come up with sneaky two sided ?'s!! just to get a check. I paint and trim carpentry, by the hour I want 40 bucks. by sf. I want a dollar sf. that is prep, paint, walls only. 2 bucks sf. for over 8ft. for trim I use the how long I know its gonna take and get the hr. rate. and this is in Iowa, if we wernt so tight with the "secret" someone might benifit from it. if theres any loballers on here they might not be loballin if they knew, hell I might be a loballer mabey one of ya can set me straight on the ritual of the secret?

Speaking for myself, I am not aware of the secret or the ritual. I am aware of the fact that one person's numbers are not going to apply to others.

Sharing certain numbers can be beneficial. But sharing others can be very misleading, particularly if someone attempts to use those numbers without understanding them. For example, if I told someone that I add $20 per hour to cover overhead and profit, that number may be totally unrealisitic for that person.

Questions about numbers are often like asking what a truck costs. What kind of truck? New or used? King cab or regular? And so on. There isn't a single answer that is accurate across the board.

There is more than one way to skin a possum. But the basic principles must be consistent. There is more than one way to price a job, but the same basic formula must be followed. That formula contains numerous variables, and each of us must determine what numbers to use for those variables.

It's kind of like finding a good fishing hole. If you know what to look for, it's a pretty simple process. If you don't, it can appear mysterious and magical. But there really isn't any magic in knowing your numbers-- you just need to understand what they are telling you.

I am with ya on the $40 an hour

$1.00 sf is a bit hi were i'm at on average it is .55 to.70 sad but true..
The over 8 ft thing you don't get stuff like that here..

My $1 SF. includes prep and such,
