Applying a water-repellent preservative to the preweathered wood before painting slowed this paint degradation. An acrylic latex primer and topcoatsystem was slightly more durable than an oil-based primer/latex topcoat system. Paint systems were vastly superior to the one coat
solid-color stains.

Anybody tried the waterproofing sealer route? I'm trying to figure out what would be compatible with top coat like Duration. I've gotten into a project a bit out of my field. Stripping and painting exterior of a 1940's Sears house outside of Houston. T-105 yellow pine siding. Paint ok under eaves and porch, but peeling and alligatored 2 feet below eaves. UV weathering on South and West exposures, mildew and moss on East and North exposures. Doing lead abatement stripping and vacuum sanding. Pulled all the caulking out between the boards.
Follow up question: should caulking be replaced between boards? The lap is only a 1/2" x 1/2" rabbet. Humidity problems are primarily outside the house.
I'm a Wisconsin cheesehead and everything seems backwards down here.
