Newjack here. I will be going through the process of becoming an apprentice painter soon. Being that cannabis is fully legal in IL and I also have an IL medical card, it's lame to have to take a drug test but whatever, I want to do it the right way and will not be cutting any corners.
So if I'm right, the process is: schedule an appointment at my local IUPAT office, fill out questionnaire/submit required documents (DL, SS, birth certificate, HS diploma), go in fill out application, get list of contractors to choose from and pick eeny meeney miney moe/hope to find one that's hiring and when you do, you get their letter of intent and that's when you take the drug test before showing up to work.
Can anyone confirm if it's a pee test or a hair test? Definitely a big difference. I'm assuming it's a pee test. (And I know it's just a formality and that most painters are drinkers & smokers and I've heard directly from a union painter of 15+ years that it's just a formality at the beginning and you're highly unlikely to get tested again after this.)
Being that the timing could go different ways based on work availability through contractors, I'm trying to avoid stopping for 30-35 days and then oh wait, no ones hiring now it could be months before I get a bite from a contractor & take the test. I plan to start the application before I've reached my 30 days so that my application is on file by the time I'm clean to hopefully not delay the test any further.
But TLDR version --> What kind of drug test is it and any advice for the timing with applying and going through the list of 400 contractors to hopefully not have to quit for more than 30-50 days?
