I've seen the threads here about painting over wallpaper and all have been very helpful. We paint over wallpaper all the time. Most of the houses around here were not prepped/sized by the builder so the paper tears the :censored: out of the wallboard. I have many satisfied customers who have not had problems for years with our method of painting over wallpaper. We always use an oil based primer then float the seams, sand where needed, etc. then cover with latex.

But now, for the first time, we have a prospective client who wants to put knock-down on the walls in her kitchen and baths to match the rest of the house. My crew lead is telling me that you cannot knock-down over an oil based primer because the mud won't pull consistently. He wants to skim coat, let dry, then apply texture. I am fine with this and should have asked him before I bid the project, but I'm like the proverbial bull in the china shop. I talked to a friend of mine who also paints (one-man-interior guy who somehow makes a killing- anyway, I digress). He says you can do knock-down over oil base. Maybe it is just a difference in skills and ablities. My crew lead has never led me wrong before so I just go with it, right? Right.

But I'm curious, as a topic of discussion, if you have applied texture to primered wallpaper and how did it work (or not work)?

All the Best!

1) That's a lot of weight
2) Just because someone "got away with" something once or three times, doesn't mean it's a good idea (heck you might be able to go a few rounds of Russian Roulette with no ill effects, maybe even quite a few, that doesn't mean it's a good idea)

Your crew wants to skim coat right over the wallpaper?...or over the oil primer?

I can tell you yes you can skim over oil
I'm not sure it's the best conditions, but it can be done
However, if your crew doesn't want to, use Gardz rather than oil
Personally I prefer to skim over Gardz

If your crew wants to skim right over the covering, they are nuts
The chances of that j/c bubbling is high

I can't say for putting K/D on top of that though....

Thanks for the responses guys. As suspected, my crew lead seems to be in the know on this. To clarify: his first response was to remove the paper. When I told him I wanted to try it w/o paper removal (knowing it hadn't been sized) he said we could give it a try but that he did NOT want to put the mud right on the paper. It needs a primer and skim. I trust this guy so don't think I was questioning his decision but when I talked to my friend it just raised a question that perhaps there was another way. (There's always another way, not necessarily the right way):whistling2:

Thanks again!
