Licensing Exams?

Just curious as to how many of you actually had to take any kind of business/painting test before you could actually start your business. I currently have a business in one state where almost anyone can walk down to the local office and "open" a contracting business of some sort...Now I am looking to move to another state (for family reasons) and have found that the other state is "cracking down" on contractors. You have to take a two part test, pass a background check, credit check, etc. etc. I personally like the idea of having stricter regulations! It weeds out the "i painted my mom's, friend's kitchen three years ago" hack painters. I believe it is better for not only the painting world, but the whole skilled trade world. What do you guys think?

Dude I think will have to put you in rehab. Start you on methadone or something.
Go to this web site: http://www.contractors-license.org/

Select the state.
Now, if it's Michigan - select Maintenance and Alteration Contractor's License. There you will see Painting & Decorating.

There are different avenues available for studying and classes.

Again, if it's Michigan you want to know about email me with your phone number and I will give you the complete "legal" way to set up in this state.

Since you've been gone, this is kind of how things have been going around here. Welcome. And dont you ever leave us like that again. No one else is posting links and telling people to search and this is how it ends up.
Lol. Yep, I am heading there fast so you might have to act quick :wheelchair:

I'm here brother V and it doesn't look like i'll be going anywhere any time soon. I am here to vent all the bad energy that has built up over the past month or so on Sister NEPS.
Southwest part.
there's a few guys here from that part. I am a frequent traveler to South Haven, St Joe etc..

Are you moving here? (Maryland)

We have a test, but it is not paint specific. It is more knowledge of customer rights, safety, OSHA, state and federal laws. They assume you can paint, hammer a nail, ect. We do have the credit and background checks.

Don't assume that "cracking down" on contractors or having an exam stops those from doing it illegaly. In fact, I think the test makes it difficult so people purposely skip getting licensed. At least here in Maryland, they cry that they don't have enough resources (ie.,MONEY) to chase the contractors. (Guess thay cannot pick up a phone book from the comfort of a desk and check people out on the computer while drinking coffee)

If you are not a bum, and have a reasonable amount of intelligence (and money) you will pass. (did I mention open book and multiple choice).
