Does anyone think looking like your cheap can land you more jobs?

I read a post about a guy in his area getting a lot of jobs because he looked mexican so they thought "he must be cheap" but he charged the same or higher.

So far I have strived to look high end just like my craftsmanship but I think i may experiment with looking cheap. Different phone number too. Like maybe rattle can on carboard as yard signs and put them all over and then show up with a crap truck with rattle can that says "painting and phone number". just an idea. lots of complaints about HO wanting cheap on these forums.

I'm also saying keep prices the same, you will just be perceived as cheap.

I think we have enough cheap dudes out there, we do not need any more of that sh...
It's a matter of LOOKING cheap to fool the customer into not bothering with other quotes, not actually BEING cheap.

It could work on a very limited basis especially if your work and service is great, they'd have this secret cheap guy to tell all their friends about that does great stuff.

One day they'll figure out oops, wasn't cheap and feel stupid, and when they feel stupid they go elsewhere next time ;)

Well, I am Mexican and probably I look cheap but really I am not cheap at all, I am already booked till the end of October. Funny thing, I have a brand new vehicle for work, I'm always clean and make sure my guys are clean as well, right now I have to turn down a lot of work or sending jobs to another guys plus a 6 jobs I lost because I was overprice and didn't want'em anyway cause I haven't figure out if I can handle to hire more guys. This is the busiest I've ever been and it's just the beginning of the year for me. I don't know if I look cheap or just because I am Mexican I've been well accepted by people in here instead of a lot of white guys.

You know it's funny. I read about guys that are booked ahead for months and months.

CP is never scheduled more than 2 weeks ahead, makes for a lot of REALLY FAST layoffs.

Real professional when you can start 2 days later eh.

I got no work tomorrow, but they are REAL busy, and hiring lots of guys for the summer rush

Jeez

I don't need that, I already look Mexican and some people actually think I am native until I start speaking with my mexican accent.
I believe my top two clients are painting companies owned by Mexicans and they are REAL professional and do great work and aren't cheap.

I think the real problem is when people have accents so thick you can't understand them, or they basically don't speak any english. I wonder how those people ever get ANY business...

Speaking of accents, we have a painter with us from Albania and he tells us that people always hang up on him when they hear his accent. It kinda sucks. I think the trick for Europeans with thick accents is to brand yourself as a European painter/craftsman/artisan. I think some people find that "romantic" and it may be a way to differentiate yourself from competition. And it's a way to turn a disadvantage into an advantage.

I do have accent but not too thick (I don't think an accent ever goes away, I was born with that) I've been living in Canada for around 8 years, I don't have any close friends that speak spanish, all the people I know speak only english so english is not an issue for me other than some grammar mistakes that I still have, I have no problem understanding people and I believe people understand me good enough. I love being in here surrounded by cute girls that think my accent is sexy, at least is what my wife says... lol
