I took this photo today of my students in at the moment (apart from three missing today).

This is two groups, one from Fiji mixed gender the other an all female class of girls from the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and Papua New Guinea.

I love the whites, man they look good all together. I hope they will learn to paint as good as they look.

Spot the Aussie

Notice the only white face in the group.... that is my son, he is now in training for the next three years learning the trade.

Not sure if it is a good move having him in my class, little smart . Any way, I am glad he chose to take up the trade, he is really enjoying it at the moment.

For transparency and validation his assessment and qualification will be moderated in Australia by a trainer there.

I think they are very happy, to have a place in a scholarship program here is like winning the lotto. they get heaps of support, training and even financial support for the next tow to three years while they are being trained.

Yeah they were very proud when they came the first time with the whites.

On a serious note, they are a bit rough at the moment as they only started recently. They do have good eye-hand coordination which is good, seems most Pacific Islanders were exposed to craft at an early age so I have a good base to work from.

After a couple of years they get to be really good.

I imagine they do. A lot of painting skills can be taught but many are a result of years of experience. I've always felt that when you can do an excellent job of cutting in using either hand, regardless of whether you're right or left handed, you know you've been doing it awhile.

One of my favorite lines from the movie the "Dirty Dozen' is when Donald Sutherland is impersonating a major general and he reviews a unit of crack paratroopers and then turns to their commander and says, "Very pretty General, very pretty. But, can they fight?" Seeing your groups' picture just brought that to mind and I couldn't resist.

I say that I like very much the photos. It helps to see what your business is all about.

Once I painted for a woman and she would take trips to Fiji every year to scuba dive. She loved going and spoke of the Fujian people with alot of positives and said they seemed very welcoming and friendly.
