Ok today I get to a job site and one of the guys say's we have a problem. As they rolled out walls tiny black pill shaped objects were appearing in the painted surface. We were using Home Depot product called Fresh Aire.Long story short, the colorants did not dissolve because the paint was not shaken enough. The store was aware of the problem from other customers and replaced good paint for the bad. The problem occurs particularly with the darker colors. Thought you might like to know, just in case. Also how do you get these stores to reimburse you for time & gas wasted solving problem and time wasted applying bad paint? Homeowner supplied it and was out of state while we were painting home.
Thanks
Jim

Thanks for the story
It really illustrates what I feel are two of the biggest mistakes painters make

Funny how often they are together along with the words "problem" and "bad"

What's so wrong with the Home Depot? I understand you feel they sell a lot of inferior products, but do you really feel like all products that are sold there are inferior?

Do you honestly feel like Rust-Oleum products do not have quality because of experience or because they are sold at Home Depot so you wouldn't touch them?

Carter... you're a good guy... but... you HAVE to know that your company makes products for Home Depot to meet a cost... they aren't exactly going for the gusto on performance in some arenas...

I think the spray paints are competitive though...

It what HD doesn't sell.... Service to contractors... DIY and Contractors at least in the paint dept. are treated as equals... doesn't fly with many contractors.

I personally feel that the service they provide is inferior. When I first started out, I was doing a lot of work for this crazy Feng Shui Lady who always wanted behr flat for everything. I spent a LOT of time at HD. The paint department manager didn't know anything about paint. So then I started going in just to make fun of him and give him a hard time, like returning mixed paint because the HO bought it and I wanted to use something different. But a lot of their products are "de specd" and quite inferior. I also am very opposed to the huge warehouse full of cheap crap that cost them way less and the underpaid, under-trained, under learned teenagers rooming the aisles trying to avoid customers. I also hate how they "force" manufactures to make cheap'er crap just for them. That is totally not ok.
My biggest thing about HD is every time i go someone hits my f**king car.

Of course we have certain cost criteria to consider on some paints. You know wolverine... there ARE some small project paints that people don't want to spend a fortune on, so we have products for that demographic. If you want to paint your birdhouse, do you REALLY want a 60 dollar per gallon paint? Most people don't. Our Painter's Touch line is not something that anyone would recommend for many jobs. It's like people always say to use the right paint for your application. To say that our premium and industrial lines do not perform well would be totally untrue.

Yes, our aerosols are actually good. The new Universal stuff is really great to be honest. I was skeptical of it and thought that it was just a gimicky cap and label, but the formula for it is far superior to anything else out there.

I have to confess. Well, partial confession. There is one finish detail in every custom home that falls outside of the typical realm of the painter but universally gets dumped on us by the salesmen of that particular finish detail, on which initially out of spite and the need to laugh up my sleeve I began using Rustoleum spray paints a few years back, but then after realizing that, while a shameless shortcut, it was actually far superior to the preferred finishing method. I will go to my grave with this one, but I swear by that stuff for one, yes probably just one, critical finish application. Someday when I have a spare moment, I will take a picture of all the Rustoleum cans on the shelf in my shop. Its the least I can do.

I'm not sure if you're serious my heart should be warmed or if I should just be waiting for the punchline!

It's good stuff... buy Universal cans from now on Scott!

Actually I am serious, and the answer is not the inside of the toilet tank or anything like that.

Tomorrow morning I am getting a spinal tap, er epidural and some, well nevermind, but anyways, my wife wont let me drive anywhere after that so I will drag myself out to the shop and line em up and take a picture. I have quite the spectrum of colors and cans. You'll see...
