Matching Ceiling/wall Texture

Just completed a repaint. The homeowner had the ceiling respackled in spots. Some areas were as big as 2' x6'. Anyway I could not get the textures to match. In the old areas the ceilings were a little rougher, the new spackled areas were very smooth. To my knowledge the old areas did not have sand added to the paint. How would you guys go about fixing this?
