I was browsing the shelves at my local Menards and came across McCloskey (sp?) High Gloss Wood Finish. Personally, I am always skeptical at these 2 part deck finishes but I picked up a brochure on it and it looks like you stain first and then apply a clear coat gloss finish over the top. Almost like a urethane.

Finished results look nice on the picture and I always like a sheen on decks (typically use Sikkens Cetol Dek Finish). Has anyone used this stuff? Any opinions on life of the product or experiences for that matter? I am under the impression that any clear coat you place over a deck is only going to last 1-2 years top. Am I wrong?

Whats with people wanting glossy decks? I noticed in a thread a month or so ago someone putting gloss on a deck and all that I see in my head is a broken tail bone. I have been asked to NOT put a glossy product down and/or put sand down more often then not. I know that being in new england the snow makes a big difference compared to the rest of the country but it seems pretty easy to me.....

McCloskeys made some great spar varnishes.

McCloskey made THE BEST spar varnish - Man-O-War. McCloskey is now owwed by Valspar and I can't find M-O-W anywhere :icon_sad:  :wallbash:

Today I just bought a can of Epifanes in hope they are now the pinnacle of marine varnishs

my supplier stocks it. We have been using it this year for the first time. Let me know if you need some...

I personally think the high gloss looks nice but your right, very slippery when wet. You'd be surprised how many requests I get for high gloss decks though.

Which? M-O-W or Epifanes ?

But it don't matter. I bought the Epifane and will use it on my pasting table. If it sucks out loud, I'll then be in the mood for some M-O-W. But reading the label, I think I'll like it. It's a tung oil product, with which I've always been happy.
