I need to paint a garage service door. It takes some light abuse. The owner wants it to stand up to some abuse and be able to take a cleaning.

My idea is to use SW everclean, because, it's less porous than other paints and it's truly scrubbable. My reasoning is that everclean will lay on real nice and still be scrubbable. The heavy duty paints will do the trick on the abuse issue, but i'm afraid the finish won't be as nice. It's a door that people use a lot, tools in and out, boot marks etc. It has original builders frazee mirro glide eggshell now. It's not washing the way it should. Plus, I don't like frazee. We have DE and SW out here.
I'd like to prime with zinser, whatsyamacallit shelllac primer (non porous) and use a non-porous top coat. I'll use a mini roller to leave a finish very close to sprayed, if the paint co-operates. I'd also like to make it so the lady of the house can repaint it very easily. She's pretty good.

Any thoughts?

What the!! what are these bugs that look like giant mosquitos?

What's frazee mirro?

Consider the SW Warterborne Epoxy or Acrylic DTM. The epoxy comes in a semigloss.

If the old paint is sound, wash it well, lightly abrade and recoat. I'd stay away from the shellac unless there are bleeding stains.

Is the door metal, wood, composite?

Joe, I'd think about a waterbased DTM also. I cannot remember where you are, but if you are anywhere near a KM, our DTM is great. It allows you to use an acrylic hardner from Rustoleum that not only speeds up the cure from 1wk to a few days, and it helps w/ color retention.

Stay away from oil. I also would not use shellac on an ext door. Too brittle.

It's a service door guys, just an entry door from inside the garage to the house. It's wood.

I'm in las vegas.
Frazee is a paint co. out here. Quite popular.

I wanted to use a shellac based primer to seal it up. Getting rid of porousity makes it easier to wash. I thought about a dtm but never used it in a decorative situation. Color retention is not an issue. The door virtually never gets sunlight.

I also thought about using a regular interior paint and coating with clear afterwords. My goal, again, is to eliminate porosity. Now if the pourosity is spelled any differnt than the three ways I've done it, I give up.:)

Everclean really is a good paint, just wondering if there is something better, that does the same thing. That reminds me, I'm taking a sharpie to SW next time. Lets see if THAT will wipe right off the everclean sample.

Hey MAK, good to see you here. I'm coming back to IL in within the next month.

Update: I just used duration, semi gloss, luminious base w/floetrol. This paint will also be used to freshen up some of the trim. It looks good on trim, goes on easy, but rolling it on the door is tricky. One wrong move and it streaks/flashes.
