Ive been working for a contractor for years and my wife and I have decided
to start our own business. We understand the concept of bidding on new construction for time and material, but could someone please let me know an average hourly rate for a painter? Any help would be appreciated.

Rob, the problem with someone giving you an hourly rate is that it means nothing to the future success of your business. The number that can keep an experienced, well oiled business profitable may be the number that puts you out of business in 6 months.

Well stated Ken. W/ that said in my area you can get from $30 to $45 per hr depending on where your working and what your doing. Residential painting.
Much less you might as well deliver pizzas, after paying Uncle Sam, that is.

Residential Painter's Bid

Bidding can be compicated. First, understand your costs. Materials, labor, transportation, and taxes. After that you just have to decide what you want to make off the project, and what you need to make off the project. If you can't negotiate a deal above what you need to make...then its not worth your time.

You need to decide if you are an entrepreneur, or a technician having an entrepreneurial seizure

Run, don't walk to your nearest library or bookstore right now

You mean to pay them?
Or you mean to charge customers?

Well, it doesn't matter much anyway
We might all be able to post up our numbers, but they won't really mean much to you
It would sort of be like me starting a new business building some computers
And not knowing how much they cost me to build, and then looking at what Dell computers cost, and what HP computers cost, and using their numbers for manufacturing or pricing
Doesn't make sense
