Hello
Ive been painting since I was 15 for my friend's father's company. Unfortunately my living situation has changed and after doing the numbers I'm scared that my income just isin't enough.

Now that im 22 with some experience, I was wondering how much a normal painter is supposed to make? Do they get paid hourly or by the job typically?

I have gained enough skill to continue in this field but I'm not sure if its worth it at this point. I'm running out of time and working for the friend's father for pocket change isin't going to cut it anymore.

Please help with some insight!

Normally, hourly if you are an employee, by the job if you are a contractor or sub-contractor
Most painting technicians get paid by the hour (employee)
There are some that get paid by the piece
And some that get paid by the job (as a sub-contractor)
Some here deal with the contracts and "getting paid" directly from whoever contracts them, when and if that happens
They may or may not actually swing a brush
They are usually considered the primary contractor (which could be a general contractor or builder, or a painting contractor/company)

Out here a painter's helper would start around $15 an hour
A painter might start at $17
With experience and skills it should be more

I've just decided how I will spend my summer vacation. My current boss doesnt pay me much more than these rates. I am coming to the cape where I will pose as an apprentice and have the best summer ever.
You know, you might consider asking for a raise. It never hurts to ask.
