What kind of experience painting do you have?

Thanks for the welcomes. I was in construction sales, mainly commercial and industrial Fresh Coat. And I stated that I didnt have any experience as a professional painter Thorne Picker. And to answer your second question got Ins. Still waiting for my class C, Started networking and tracking down friends that were contractors. Done a few small jobs. Ive got 2 estimates to give next week for a couple of rooms each. I havent really started pushing yet as far as mailing campaigns and different paid advertising but have priced several and am gonna get on that nextg week.

You mis-understood my post. I was asking about your "sales" experience in the painting / construction area - not your experience as a painter. Even my last sentence stated it didn't matter. Now, why you gotta start name calling (Thorne Picker - whatever the hell that is)? I was more curious about how you have generated leads in this particular arena. I did not mean to offend you.

Welcome to the forums.

As BikerBoy stated there is a ton of info here at PaintTalk. I can tell you from the short time I have been here I have learned tons of info to better my business and to be more successful at it.

As Workaholic pointed out that link in his thread, GREAT info there too. Even though I have been painting for a good few years, still a great thread to read and the books are on my TO ORDER list here soon for new info as well as refresher's.

Again Welcome aboard and enjoy the experience here, you WON'T GO Wrong and can't find a better place ;)

The plan is to learn as much about painting as well as the business side and stick with small jobs that Im comfortable with at first. I'm working on tracking my production rates in order to estimate better so I would appreciate any suggestions on how you guys track them. I also am curious about the best way to track different marketing methods and expenses in order to see my ROI. Thats the short term plan. Long term I want to focus on the business and marketing and hire roughly 4 to 5 painters and sub out anything I cant handle. And I've read For new members and visitors: So you think you want to be a painting contractor? several times. The few leads ive generated so far have just come form telling everyone I know that I was going to start painting. Im cosidering Valpak and Service Majic as well as the Local Paper. Im wondering if there worth the investment. Any thoughts?

Matt, you may not like my reply but hopefully you will see the logic in it.

In my opinion you have absolutely no right to represent yourself as a professional painting company with no on-the-job experience. Now, I do believe your background can make you much more successful than even the best painter with no sales and marketing experience. But aren't you just setting yourself up for smoke and mirrors? Are you planning to get experience by doing sloppy jobs at unsuspecting homeowners' expense? :icon_eek:

Perhaps you are here to gather information and for that I applaud your willingness to do things correctly. But that still comes down to being able to back up what you are selling. I'm just curious about your game plan? Hire painters/subs? Practice on mom/sister/brother/friends' houses first?

Maybe you should learn the trade and business practices of the painting industry before you start a mailing campaign....
