I have those cut buckets with the magnetic brush holder sitting in my shop. I had been spraying BM Metal and Wood Low Lustre black on a couple pieces and noticed the the magnets attracted the black overspray mist. I had used liners in the cut buckets and the area directly above the magnet had 100x more paint than the other areas. :blink:. It obviously does not matter at all for any real purposes, just struck me as strange that magnets attracted overspray. Any thoughts as to why?

The black uses black iron oxide as a pigment.

The paint has a specific polarity. That is determined by a number of things including pigments, diluents, and solvents. Think about electrostatic painting where the paint is charged either + or - and the "work" is the opposite. Opposites attract.

I like the oxide theory. Wonder if a red oxide would do the same thing?

I have another theory though, doesn't the atomization of the paint create some kind of charge? Either static or otherwise?

I did not think about the pigments, that could be it. I would not think polarity of paint would necessarily be the cause, because in elctrostatic, the charge is added to the substrate and paint (I think). I am not sure that magnetic polarity is the same as electrical polarity (eg - electrical charge would not be drawn necessarily to a + magnetic pole????)I am surprised that it would even show up on the magnet though, since I would not think it would be able to pull material from very far away at all.

I've worked for alot of companies, and they all have those cut buckets sitting in their shop. I never see anybody use them though? :blink:

I have them for when I run low on good empties. Back-up cut buckets.

We stopped using them because they tip over easily. Too top heavy. Otherwise a good idea. Mike

I save the plastic butter type containers to use as cut buckets, etc. When not in use snap the lid back on and paint stays fresh. I also make use of buckets from my pool chemicals, add metal paint roller rack. You have a decent roller bucket. Again place lid on bucket and paint stays fresh.
