Hey guys any advice on a house that has been previously stained with oil semi-transparent. Its fading and the homeowner wants it cleaned and restained but should I strip the old finish and brighten before applying the new stain? My gut says yes to get the look I want but any advice is appreciated.

Yes, you can downstream a sodium hydroxide based stripper then wash with < 800 psi. Same procedure for acid stage. Mix acid full strength and downstream. Watch your windows and metal.

I have had success with a chemical free pressure wash followed by a quick sand on the shiny parts, then apply a semi-trans. It is helpful if the new finish is similar to the previous finish. If a completely different look is called for, a stripping may be the best way...IMO.

I strongly recommend against non-chemical, high pressure washes on wood.

Tsunami, I like to do the best prep possible to avoid blotchiness and ensure longevity. With the right chems its very easy and gentle on the wood and surrounding landscaping.
