wash...prime...2 coat paint. Like most surfaces. You can stain them. Pick a dark penetrating oil base. Two coats a must. Most composites will take a p-stain. I've tested alot. Cabot's and Wolmon F&P work the best IMO. The latest trend is painting the rails/posts white and staining the balusters with a dark p-stain. Its a neat look.

Wolvie...It has worked for me using Cabots penetrating oils. Maybe, because everyone in this are buys the cheap composites at our local menard's home improvement warehouse. I believe it has less glue solids and the Cabot's seems to grab to the particles. I'm not sure. I know with my testing of the p oils it seems cabot has a higher dye content than the others. It seems that they use more pigment than dye. It works on uprights pretty well I drive past two jobs I've done every other day and they look great after a year and half.
