Stripping some wallpaper this week and you all know this issue. In one bedroom the drywall wasn't primed, started making a mess then convinced the HO to let me patch and paint over it. What is the best oil-based odorless primer for this?

Should sand the wallpaper lightly first, prime with oil-based, sand again, patch, sand again, spot prime, then paint.......correct?

Will need to buy more sand paper........

Pete.

That's a good link painttofish posted.

I have one qustion, what type of paper is it? Paper paper, paper or cloth backed vinyl, vinyl or acrylic coated paper, or even non-woven ? My choice of proceedures would depend on the paper.

I know, I know PWG,
But the paper wouldn't budge from the drywall. I started pulling on it and chunks of drywall started coming off. I stripped 3 other rooms and it went fine.
I'm not offering a warranty, and the homeowner is pretty cool. She agreed to paint over once she saw the mess and all I managed to do was rip craters in the wall.
It's paper/paper, sanded it pretty good before priming with oil Zinsser. Sanded the oil and put joint compound to smooth........can't tell it's wallpaper no more.
