I thought I had my finishes worked out. But...have been having some serious problems the last couple of weeks. Tried out some new things that were recommended to me and got into a lot of trouble.

Anyway, I finally got my sign cut and painted with the base coats. Primed with gripper, sanded, primed again, sanded again, then sprayed with a latex interior enamal, two coats with no sanding.

The problem is the stencil part. The last time I used Krylon 18kt gold paint. They came out good enough to sell. However there were some issues with the gold paint not being quite even. But I attributed that to not having used a primer.

Well, today, I ruined two signs that are already late by using the same Krylon. Why does this paint look like it's got brown dust?

It's totally blotchy I don't get it.

I need to find a way to quickly paint the gold stencils.

Any ideas?

I would use an automotive airesol for car touch up. It is compatable over krylon. And lots more choice of colors. Go for a cadilac or corvette metalic they are loaded with metallic. Use the airesol clearcoat to kick it up another notch. MOPAINT

This is interesting.

What type of substrate are you using. Wood, metal, etc.

What level of finish are you looking for from 1 to 10.

How big are these things.

I do signs using automotive finishes on aluminum panels. Our system incorporates vinyl labels verses stencils. We complete it with an automotive clear polyurethane. Short of gold leafing, you may want to check into automotive paints for the gold. I'm not sure how that'll go over gripper.

use an airbrush with metallic paints from golden, airtex.

nice and controllable, and more predictable than that rattle can

if you are intent on using the rattle can, i would suggest using a repostionable and tacky frisket.

can you direct me to your site, or post some pics so i can check out some of your stuff??

The stubstrate is sanded plywood.

Not sure of levels of finishes. Just want it to be an acceptable finish. Doesn't have to be a 10, but definately not a 1. Maybe more like an 8?

right now I'm doing 24 x 12. Will be doing 2' x 4'.

I prime the wood with gripper, then two coats of latex black, then lay the vinly stencil over all that, then paint the gold, then use polyacrylic to finish it off. It was working well enough but yesterday was horrible.

Can I use the automotive over the latex? Will it give me a more even coat?

The only thing I did different this time around was not sanding in between the latex coats. Can't imagine that's the problem. But then, I'm the idiot who started a "paint company" before I learned how to paint.

Don't have the money for an airbrush at the moment. I have a compressor and paint sprayer though. Would the metallic paints from golden work in that? It's a syphon feed. Sorry for spelling.

Here's some pics.
