we have a rather delicate problem with a young crew member of ours. my wife has told me to treat it as an internal matter because he's young and might be offended if I'm upfront about it. I agreed with her and decided to try the 'gentle' and 'understanding' approach. But first i thought i'd ask all you chaps for your opinions and to see how you'd handle it. the problem is this:

Our apprentice - Roland - smells like a polecat.

How bad is it? open the doors beneath your sink then plunge your head into the waste disposal unit, then double it.

anyone else had these problems? how do you think it should be dealt with?

Stop by Wal-mart, buy some soap and deodorant, shampoo, etc. call him aside talk with him about the issue one-on-one. Present him with the care package, and tell him he must be presentable each day when he shows up...
No offense to anyone, but is he Polish? It's pretty common.

Roland from Poland? :whistling2:

No, no, no....it's the Polish Racing Stripes you are thinking of
That's how we know our underwear isn't on backwards

;)

But really, I can see the buying some soap and all being a little more insulting than simply saying (with a smile) "hey Roland...listen...we like you, but could you scrub up a bit before work, you're a bit whiffy there pal"

He may not know
(He may not care...lol)
He may think his after work shower is good enough

...He may not have any hot water at home and only showers once a week

But I think it has to come out in the open...where the fresh air is
Have some fun with it. Heres how: Stop at Home Depot after work and buy one of those 1000 watt twin head halogen tripod lights; go to the grocery store and buy the fixins for a nice spicy chili. Have the chili for dinner, set up the light right next to ole poopy pants the next day and every time you have to pass gas, go let poof out right in front of the halogens. The halogen will bake the fumes which intensifies the odor greatly. He will be blown away. When he says something about how much you stink, there you have your opening.
Maybe ******** will loan him the kiddie pool. Or you can do him like the wining football team does the coach... Igloo him every afternoon..
I vote for ********'s pool & Mr. Bubble...don't forget the duckie

I don't have any pets, but the mr. bubble sure brings back memories.

roland from poland, I don't care who you are, that was funny.

I guess I'd have a private meeting with him, preferably outside. Not sure what end the odor is coming from, but it's just not acceptable.

Some people shower in the morning to be clean all day, some shower at night so the bed doesn't get dirty. If your job involves being clean, you better shower in the morning or you might not have a bed to sleep in.
I would talk to the guy one on one. It may help it may not. I worked with a guy when I was an apprentice that would stink to high heaven before 9am every day, he had something wrong with him and no matter what he tried he could not help but stink. It did have a positive on big jobs, if I could not find him I could sniff him out, even in a mall!!!
Paul maybe you can use the rubber duckie video above as a trey training video on proper hygiene.
Am I alone here? What's a Polecat?!! Is it like a Thundercat?
a polecat is like a ferret or stoat. what's a thundercat? you made that up !
i just googled it. roland came up.
