We finished stripping 2300 sqft of Mahogany decking today and were tying down the ladders when in pulls the bug spray guys. They ask what we are painting and I explain.... They said that they spray the entire home and decks with whatever chem's they have and of course say it doesn't hurt the finish bla bla. I turned them away saying we won't be finishing the decks until friday and not to come until late next week. If we had left 10 min earlier they would have shot there chems all over our 2 day 2 man stripping and neutralizing deck prep. The home owners are done with the house for the year (live in Switzerland) so no one would have stopped them.

My question is this. Does anyone have experience with what these guys spray and what adhesion/penetration problems could occur from there chems? Having a stain last on a hardwood deck or any deck for that matter is hard enough. The bug spray guys come twice a year so that obviously could be a problem with maintaining the decks. I will be speaking to the homeowner about this and will try to have them spray under the decks only.

I would think HomeGuard would be able to give some insight here but I wouldn't think it would be an issue. I could be wrong but I thought those chems came in concentrates and were water soluable. If they are colorless I wouldn't think they would have caused any problems but I would have chased them away just the same.

Once the sealer is on the deck should be protected.

Most all companies use a water based chemical in their mix, most are mixed a 1 0z to 1-2 gallons of straight water. So they are basically spraying water. Some chemicals will leave a residue but those arn't usually used for matainance sprays. (like this ) If you can find out the product they were using i could pull the MSDS and tell you mix rates and what it is.

Thanks HGP, the guy who watches there home said that the chem leaves a milky residue on the windows after the application. This all happened today so I will find out more in days to come. I don't like the idea of two applications yearly of unknown chems applied to the mahogany decks I am maintaining.

one thing to remember with pest products is that the EPA has take the good stuff away, so most of these products will only last 30 -45 days before breaking down fully. I suspect that adhesion wouldn't be effected unless they used a petroilum based product
