Lol! I know what you mean. The manager at my PPG distributor said they want to send more paint to Home Depot and are downsizing the local carriers.
I used to work for them and they just don't get it. They didn't appreciate or even respect experience or knowledge and they ran those people off so they could pay people peanuts. They might as well just close up their stores and go all in on the big box stores. The stores in my areas never have a single car in the parking lot.

I think their plan long term is to just be in HD, just like SW long term to be in Lowes.

The way it's going, sooner or later it will all be owned by one big mega-corp. Walmart? Amazon? AliBaba? Alphabet? These consolidations work well for corporate execs and shareholders. Some say for consumers (= cheap stuff). But it's all for the worse in the long run. "Consumers" are also the under-paid laborers in the mega-corps.

Does PPG even make paint anymore? Half their inventory is always empty when I go to order
It's gotten a LOT better lately. I would say about 80% of the stuff I go to order is in-stock now, just 3 months ago that number was more like 20%.

I've heard from various reps over the years that the corporate stores division is a mess.

Anybody try the PPG UltraLast paint yet? Looks really good. Watched a painter on YouTube give a good review but would like more feedback from fellow painters if possible. Thank you.
I carry it, but don't really have much to say. I've only had a few people use it on jobs and they liked it fine. Nobody said it was tricky to work with or had any complaints. The sheens do run a bit high. The matte is more similar to the rest of PPG's eggshells. The eggshell is more like PPG's other satins. And the semi-gloss is on the shinier end of semi-gloss.

*citation needed
Just an opionon on the way I see the tides moving so no citation needed; just stop by any HD then ask any PPG dealer if product is actually available to order. That's my opinion/outlook on what their plans are long term . I don't think PPG takes the architectural market very serious IMO. I make about 10%more with PPG paints so I would like to carry them especially the industrial products but they're simply unavailable to order for the majority of them

I got away from PPG because they got a new sales rep and he was just a jerk. I know another painter who left for the same reason. I came back because they got a new sales rep, a friend of mine. I knew him before he started at PPG. He gives me GREAT deals on paint, way better than Sherwin.

that’s the same as saying that BM’s long term plan is to move into Ace Hardware. SW has always had independent store locations, and PPG has always sold to smaller retailers.

You're certainly entitled to your own opinion on the other side of the counter, don't take my word for it though ask any other independent PPG dealer if they're happy with them.

Ask if they can get you 20 gallons safety yellow DTM or Aquapon lol.

I don't think it was a statement of fact. More of a sense. Looking for a statement from the corporate board or something?

SW is on a mission to try to buy up a much of the painting industry as possible. Do I have a "citation" for that? Nope. I just keep seeing what they're doing/buying. The PPG / HD alliance is likely the corporate defense strategy for that. Do I have a citation for that? Nope. You get a sense for what's going on. And as a retailer, I'll take coco's "sense" for things over most any others.

And there's little indication that BM is looking to go to some exclusive ACE merger/alliance. That's a weird comparison because the business models are totally different. Comparing ACE / BM to the likes of Lowe's/SW and HD/PPG is like comparing apples and oranges. If we compare to food, ACE/BM are more like what IGA (INDEPENDENT grocers alliance) is/was. They facilitate supply for independently owned, small(ish) businesses. But Lowes/SW and HD/PPG are more like WalMart. They own/control/top-down-manage everything. Two different business planets.

Just take a look at what PPG did to our resident ornery expert, @PACman had he been more diversified his store would have survived. Probably. Or at least a better chance

Not trying to be a jerk but if your buddy is the Sales Rep at PPG, why are you on here asking about PPG products? He just throws you low pricing but can't give you paint advice on products?

That sounds like my PPG rep tbh. Showed up to my store for 30min, threw some pricing at me on speed hide and gripper then left.

No not at all. Good question. He has not been there long and I would rather hear from people who have experience actually using the products and using them for some time. For example when I asked the store manager who has been there many years to recommend a ceiling paint he said Speedhide 6-1011. Well, I sprayed 15 gallons on a new construction job and had to go back and redo the ceilings. Too much sheen. I then asked my sales rep friend to suggest a ceiling paint that is white and flat. He suggested MultiPro and Speedhide EVO Zero ....... But, thanks to the feedback from this site Im not going with those two but found a better product the PPG Premium Ceiling Paint 17-45. Nobody at my PPG store even knew 17-45 was available.

I wouldn't blame them for this. When PPG did their product optimization back in 2019, they told us they were discontinuing 17-45, along with a couple other ceiling paints, and replacing them with 9585. Then, they just didn't discontinue 17-45. Nobody was told it was still available or that they had decided to bring it back.
