Preparing the Canvas

Is it OK to wash the linen canvas that I want to use for my next painting? Im afraid washing will have an effect on the texture of the canvas and might also affect my artwork.

I'm doubtful anyone here will know how to answer that. We are mainly house painters, not portrait painters.
