I won't touch an exterior shingles job unless I can use my 20 year old Honda 3500PSI washer . It works like a cats meow ....AWESOME !!! Yes....in the wrong inexperienced hands and in some particular areas of the home exterior you will do damage . An experienced operator will know this and avoid it . What cannot be avoided are shingles that are rotten but still look good on the outside . When that pressurized water hits them....they are GONE !!! A scraper can also causes a lot of damage on shingles when used wrong which happens when that arm using it grows tired which never happens with my Honda !!!! We also still as a rule have to go over the home after with a blade scraper to remove some residue and lifting paint and I always have our guys carry a scraper with them when priming as there will be some spots that were missed . You want to make one or two passes over the wood starting from the top down and you also must adjust the angle of your wand to avoid damage and also the distance from the wall . I have had much more success with PW than with hand scraping and I have found if done properly and allowed to dry properly....you will get an extra 5 years out of a paint job . Yes...we all have our opinions on what is best....but I have been doing it for 30 years and this is the way I advise for shingles . My customers have had no complaints on it .
