S/W will have a price increase this month of 9% on paints and 7% on sundries. We had a 4% in May. Not surprised but a bit shocked by the total of 13%.
Noticed quarts of Duration Home on the shelf, my rep. says quarts of Super Paint Semi are no longer available and is expecting the same to happen to flat and satin. What's up with that?

I heard there will be another round of increases this fall most likely, at least with the brands I deal with. One of them will be at 3 increases since this winter if they have another one this year. Pass it on to the customer.

You ever notice that the price increases are all due to the increase in oil prices. I can believe that since everything has to use fuel to get delivered. Does anyone think we will see a price reduction once fuel prices come back down?
No. :(

So I guess we just pass it on to the consumer or eat it?
Aaron,

We are already eating "rice and beans" here.

I'm passing any increases to the consumer, and and additionally a little cut for my business.

"Fuel prices come back down?"
....I don't think so.

I'm of the mindset that we might need to think five as in $5. dollars per gallon and just get use to it.

I know we all talk about passing these costs on, but as a small residential repainter most of our jobs are around 10-30 and a 9% increase on these small jobs could price me out.Example $100 on $1,000. I won't get this job. Then you say these aren't the customers you want anyway. Seriously, thats most of the customers I come across, and I need them! I am concerned that these several "small increases", that are actualy compounded increases , are going to have people thinking twice about hiring "legitimate contractors. ie licensed, comp.,ins.,taxes

It will get tougher I am seeing one of the largest ...I guess I will have to wait... responses I have had. And I am one of those guys in the mid range on most my bids for this area. Not sure whoever inherits the White House will be able to do much either..

I can remember back in the 70's (can't remember anything about yesterday ;) ) when all paint went up due to the price of oil going up. Even latex saw a drastic price increase due to oil prices.

I am still wondering why the prices never came down when oil prices dropped after the embargo :icon_confused: :surrender:

It's a tough choice to raise your prices in a competitive market or to eat the increases. But, if you don't raise your product prices to reflect what YOU pay for them, then others prolly won't also. Be a leader. Start the trend.

If the cost of doing business has a legit increase then according to the most basic laws of business, your prices must rise. If you want to tilt at the windmills of increasing prices, I'll see you on the bread lines, Don Quixote.

titanium dioxide

someone told me that tit. dioxide went up 4%. That same person (who owns a paint store) said that certain other companies (SW) were being shady by saying that they had to increase their prices by 9%. He said the increase was not that large and that they fudge the figures all the time...I do agree with one thing. Those prices never come down, that's for sure. Not long and we will be paying $50-60 for a gallon of normal wall paint!!!

Well.. TiO2 is an energy intensive process. That said... you can see prices range in difference by as much as 30%. Some will try to qualify the cheaper TiO2 and some won't, but I wouldn't necessarily expect to hear about those and expect to see money back in your pocket.
