I read very many posts on this site and I know that most of us painters are taking pride in our works. We have the skills to deliver quality paint jobs and we demand top $$ for it.

I think it would be fun if Sherwin Williams or any other paint distributer can sponsor this kind of competitions. It will be base on, obviously, cutting in walls, ceiling, trim, and speed....overall quality of his or her work.

Maybe they have done this already but have not been to one.
I know that sometimes SW has an open house for contractors only. They give free luch.... All they have to do is just add a friendly competitions among contractors.

It might be a good selling point for SW and anyone who wins.

what would it really prove? What will the guy who wins have over the others? Will he advertise...

"Hire ME! Afterall, SW said I was better than _________"

Good idea, but would prove nothing

As much as I like the folks at SW, they still aren't any different than your average HO-clueless about true quality and they don't have the same eye as a painter. I mean, they practically read from a script when you talk with them (with a few exceptions)

Oh, and another thing. Everyone and their mother thinks they can paint, so right from the beginning, there would have to be some sort of selection process. I can see the fights starting already..."I'm just as good as this a-hole, I've been painting 30 years!"

How many of us have met someone who has been painting "30" years, that we are much better than? Probably all of us. See the issue?

I do agree with having some type of contest but speed has to be included in the equation because given the same time everybody paint job will probably look the same given that we all are equally fantastic painters!!!!

Not so sure about that one. We have seen painters who, given all the time in the world cant create even the appearance of perfection. So they just go as fast as they can to make money on skinny bids.

I paint way too slow to enter in a competition; I actually call my speed "smooth". I would like to see some of the really good, fast guys for inspiration. It could be sponsered by HGTV or ESPN.

Like the Olympics!!!

Speed Skating

....and Figure Skating

One's strictly time trials (but stay within the lines)

The other a point system for artistry (with specific elements that must be addressed, but with freedom to address them however)

Then....there's the Hawkey!!!!

Yes i would advertise...
When you meet with potential clients, don't you want to tell them how good of a painter you are? Tell them things that sets you apart from the other guys.

I know that this is not the most importance thing in painting Buz.. but it's could be helpful.

I don't know about other people. For me, I need all legit helps that i can get.

And please Nordic that speed was not the only thing i listed on my first post.

A pro should have speed and accuracy;)

My point is that if we are talking about a painting proffesional in a contest, that given enough time most of us will have a cookie cutter appearence and judging it will be difficcult thing to do without speed added to the equation....If it takes u 3 days to paint a room normally what fun would a contest be if u couldnt show your skills on how FAST and ACCURATE you can do it.....

I am in a contest, I enter daily, I gauge my success at doing my job well myself, as most that I work for are not qualified. In the end my prize is a check, a smile, and a handshake... well truth be known it often is accompanied by a few beers a supper, some whiskey.... and a new friend and a referrer lol

A store contest just would not interest me :)
Cheers
