Note to self (and others who are listening in):

Any job over 10k, or any job that will financially hurt you if it happens to go south for any reason now requires a credit check on the buying party before contracts are signed. Credit checks only cost around $30. Well worth it. Think about it.

PWG,

Here's hoping you didn't learn this the hard way for everybody else's benefit:) How do you do a credit check?

You might check with your bank.
I have used their services on larger accounts, when I felt their were a need to check out a client. You can also check online fo credit checks or your yellowpages. Also some realtor's that have apartment management services can do these type checks.

Man - I've thought about that alot on occasions - what if this one customer turns into a non-paying nightmare - in the past I have relied too heavily sometimes on a single account to make it through. I will definitely start doing that on big jobs.

Unfortunately, I did.
I have used intellius.com in the past. Also, here in MO, there is a site called case.net where you can find active and resolved lawsuits. Both of these would have saved me a lot of grief and heartache.
