I am installing an antique (read OLD) teak garden gate from India. It has been painted a number of times and I would like to seal it (and the many layers of paint) from the elements in an outdoor setting. I've looked at a number of products--everbrite, polycrylic, etc.--but I don't know what will protect it and adhere to the paint. The paint has been sanded so there are no bubbles, chips, etc. Would love some advice from a professional in the field. THX

I recall seeing some durability tests and that Modern Masters was very well rated.

If there's no budget I'd hit it with Smith's Clear Penetrating Epoxy Sealer first. It will seal deep below the surface, stop water intrusion, and also act like a primer. Since it's an epoxy it doesn't have any UV inhibitors so I'd recommend either Interlux's clear varnish or Epifane's two part polyurethane. All three products are widely used in the boating industry.

If you want something more budget friendly go with Z spar's high solid one part marine varnish.
