Recession?

Do any of you feel we are in a recession? Has this year been slower for you? Has higher gas prices changed the way you do business like planning your day more strategically, less trips to the paint store, and more phone screening of tire kickers before going out to give an estimate?

No, this year (07) is my best year.
I hope to do at least the same or better in 08.

Ditto
guess its all on where you at and whose building...cause it slowed down here ....if your a bid painter...but if you work for 10 an hour you have work,,,huummmm i wonder why????
I really think its the area that your in. But the gas prices have hurt everyone for sure. Have they made an electric truck yet?
Here it is work 60+ hours one week, 0 the next. When work is slow I go into lazy mode, stay up late, sleep in, then when it gets busy it takes me days to recover to go to bed early, rise early. It's going to kill me soon!!! Not a healthy life, it's my fault I know, but this is no way to live. Feast or famine. I'm going to go apply at Home Depot as a paint mixer and get a steady routine before my wife leaves me. It's like God is messing with me, one week the phone never rings, the next week 10 calls all come in one hour on one day. Beam me up Scotty, this planet sucks!
'07 went out with a bang!!! I do know many painters down here that are without work, selling or pawning what they own. I guess I dont feel the pinch simply because I specialize in faux.
2007 was my best year so far (only 3rd year selfemployed), and 2008 his already shaping up to be better if my new construction leads play out like I am hoping (in this is in MI, where we are undergoing a one state recession). I need to make some hiring decisions soon.
I've been off since christmas, getting back to work Monday.
A service company owner feels a recession when he or she is inefficient with routine (no systems for estimating and performing tasks), markets haphazardly and to the wrong type of people and doesn't monitor his cost of doing business. Chip, this is not meant to make you feel bad or to try and degrade you but it sounds like you need to analyze what you are doing and make some changes for '08.

The economy in this country is on the verge of collapse, the 7 years of Bush and his give all the bucks to the ultra rich and the Halliburtons of the world are only part of his dread legacy.

The painting and construction industries have been among the hardest hit, with the union sector being the most devastated.

I know you say why give a krap about unions? The answer is that the union wages in construction have for the most part upheld the non-union wages in every part of this country with any union presence, but the lack of any attempt to stop the flow of illegals will cripple both union and non-union contractors alike.

You can market until the cows come home, and unless or untill you match the price of the contractor who hires the illegals, you will end up on the losing end.

VOTE!!! for candidates in the next election who will put American citizen's first, and secure our borders or you will become a statistic in the demise of this countries appetite for cheap labor.

Well it would be easier to give a crap about unions if they were not pushing FOR illegals. Maybe not YOUR union, but the one representing hotel and resturant workers lobbied hard for the amnesty plan this past year. Lucky American citizens burned up the phones BEFORE the vote that BOTH parties were intent to pass. (did you call?)

That said I don't think most union members agree with all positions that the union headquarters chooses to take.
