the project manager in the company i work for asked me to refinish a big solid front door damaged by fire. the burn is superficial to the upper part of the door. instead of sanding it is the any chemical or anything to remove the damage before applying a stripper ?

Try Simple Green cleaner, i have had great success with that cleaner removing stubborn stains. You will get a million replies with everyones favorite cleaner, they probably would all work.

but seriously, why not sand. Is it just smoke damage? That might just clean off.
