Has anyone here found a way to clean filtration soil off of paint? The filtration soil I am talking about is the black soot most commonly seen on the edges of light/white carpeting and comes from the heating and ventilation system. I recently tried to clean some off of a bedroom wall (behind the headboard) and was unsuccessful with what I used. It was covered very well with one coat of paint.

My problem is that the customers wanted their liv/din walls painted, but not the ceiling. There are ceiling vents on either side of the sliding glass doors and after we permanently removed the drapes we could see filtration soil stains on the ceiling above where the drapes used to be. Has anyone here had success cleaning this sort of stain? I know painting will cover it, but as I said, the owners do not want to have the whole ceiling painted.

Any thoughts other than telling the customers that its either paint it or live with it?

You might get by with a mild solution of a water diluted cleaning solution. But it will require wetting down the surface to be cleaned, allowing the cleanser to realease the soil. Then, a wipe with clean water, rinsing frequently, may clean it up, but may not remove the soil stain 100%.

In other words, it may be six one way, half a dozen another for painting verses cleaning.

CApainter, I was unsuccessful with the cleaning solution I used. I believe I tried ammonia based window cleaner, non-phosphate TSP (sodium metasilicate) and possibly TSP itself, none of which were successful. Any suggestions on what chemical to use?
