Hello there. My name is Josh and I am located in Yorktown, Va. For the last several months, my fiancee and I, Cristina have discussed opening a Paint Business of our own. She is A Real Estate Agent and I have been working for a General Contractor for the last three years. We plan to target Residential Homeowners for marketing. Working for builders is not an option because the profits just aren't there since it will just be me, her and a weekend helper at first. My first marketing campaign will include distribution of Flyers, doorhangers and business cards in targeted neighborhoods, including the one we live in. I plan on keeping my Job for the time being until things get rolling. If you have any comments, feel free to speak freely. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Josh

Welcome Josh .... as Tim said ....check out the search option ...there is a TON of good info from some great people on here. The best advice I can give is to know your rates, be honest and pray that Atlanta comes to their senses and grab Matt Ryan with the no 3 pick. Kid is a stud!

You may find that doing the work is the easy part. It's the phone calls, e-mails, appointments/estimates, picking up supplies, customers trying to renegotiate, bothering you about start dates etc that will make you crazy if you let it. You'll probably also find that your day is not over when you get home after bustin your butt all day.
And then there's also the occasional insane customer who you will never make happy. They may blame you for scratches in the floor that were already there, complain about dust or smell etc. Just this year I had one customer write me a check and run, tried to short me 1K, and another who actually damaged her own house, took pictures, said I did it, then wanted money back.
I focused on some of the negatives, but I really like my job, Good Luck

My Daddy always said "don't poop where ya eat!"

And if you plan on keeping your current job, don't let your extra work have an effect on your current job. (lateness, tired, stealing customers)

Josh,

This maybe in the treads that were listed above. Since you have already have some contacts in the contracting business... those who do remodels and repairs, drywall, etc. build a referral relationship with them for their referrals for painting... and you refer them for their specialty.
I also have a couple of interior decorators that send me regular and very profitable work. If you are going to do quality work they are an excellent source for referrals.

I have also found a post card sent to TARGETED neighborhoods (people who can afford to pay for painting Vs DYI neighborhoods) work very well.
I have also found I have better response with the postcards over letters on my ROI.

Hope this helps

Need advice

Ok. Now Im off. The Lady I worked for really didn't accept the fact that I wanted to go off on my own. I have some steady work over the next couple of months painting some apartments. I also have a list of other property management companies I would like to get in with. Being a One man show I don't want to become overwhelmed. I simply want to paint everyday, rain or shine. Im working on a shoestring for a budget. I am planning on using the profits from working to start marketing. I need some Ideas. Thanks in Advance
