I have to quote a large kitchen all cabinets. The cabinets are custom built Rutt cabinets (very high end). He wants them sprayed, I have a HVLP for this type thing. He ordered a top coat from the manufacturer, the top coat is a varnish speced from the manufacturer. He wants Sherwin Williams Pro Classic oil sprayed on the cabinets, which is what I generally use for cabinets.

I have researched the varnish, seems the varnish itself is colored, but I don't know because I could not open the cans. The varnish is not quite satin (little less gloss). I am wondering two things. One: he wants the cabinet color to match EXACTLY the color that is on now, not sure how to achieve this if the top coat varnish is tinted. Two: How will the two different sheens react, in other words putting a not quite satin top coat over a semi gloss base coat.

Also, he has said he wants a factory finish on the cabinets. I have done many cabinets, and they always look good, my question is can one achieve a factory finish with an HVLP. The HVLP i own is a "CAPSPRAY CS 10,000"

He also wants everything on the cabinets sprayed, including the frames, which means I have to partition off the kitchen from the rest of the home, and bring the HVLP into the kitchen to do everything but the doors and drawers, doors and drawers will be taken off site.

Anyone that has any information, advice or comments please. Thanks in advance!

Wait, What? Yes, HVLP is how they spray in the factory. Are you putting on proclassic and spraying varnish over it? Keep in mind that you are going to have to unhang everything and set up a spray booth in his kitchen to shoot the rest of his cabinets. Also, any waterbased product will have a much lower sheen than an oil based. You sound very unsure of yourself on this one. This might not be the job you learn to spray cabinets on, He just sounds like the kind of guy that if everything is not absolutely flawless he won't write the check.

he said he has painted many cabinets,,,

imo, pro classic oil will give you a nice look,,,,,,but for painting cabinet doors, its a pain in the butt with extended dry times,,,,,youll be working on them for a while

your main question seems to be>>> will there be any problem with the 2 different sheens

i dont think that will be a problem

ive varnished/polyd hardwoods using a high gloss as my first coat, and finished it up with a satin,,,,,,,this is somthing ive seen floor guys do, and it worked well for them, and my results were fine

i have no idea if the 2 materials you mention will work well together,,,,,,,i imagine the varnish will impart a color unless its a crystal clear

work up some samples,,,get them to sign the actual sample board

also>>>>>ive shot many cabinets, both in cabinet shops, and in the field as a painter

i can get really good results in the field,,,,,but imo if they are asking for a FACTORY FINISH on high end cabinets, i would be hesitant to use some system im not familiar with

just transporting the doors that arent fully cured sounds like a nightmare,,,,,,,no easy touch ups there,,,,,,,thats where a catalyzed product will come in handy,,,,,very hard, and cured,,,,,,,,now thats factory.

Since he ordered the varnish then the color is his problem not yours. Make sure he knows this before you start and that if he doesn't like it when you are done what the price will be to do it again with another color. Get your $s in order before you start.
